In honor of International Surf Day on June 15th, Pura Vida sponsored a beach cleanup at La Jolla Shores with the Surfrider Foundation (and a few other awesome local partners, too!). Check out a quick recap and some of our favorite pics below!
At 9am, we collected our gloves and bags, and set off down the beach to start clearing the area of trash, microplastics, and as many other harmful items as possible. We especially kept an eye out for microplastics, as they can be hard to spot and extremely harmful, since they’re easily mistaken for food and can be ingested by marine life.
Once our bags were full, we returned back to the main area to return the trash so it could be sorted and properly disposed of. Everyone that participated in the cleanup was rewarded with a Surfrider bracelet and some other awesome prizes to thank them for their support!
With a morning of hard work behind us, we began a fun day of yoga, cornhole, surfing, and just enjoyed the gorgeous day at the beach.
While we enjoyed the activities on land, Urban Surf 4 Kids, a local outreach organization that works with orphan youth and foster kids, brought out a group of kids for their first surf session!
We closed out the day with the awesome Surfrider volunteers giving a visual presentation on plastic pollution, and great tips and tricks to refuse or reduce single use plastic.
HUGE thanks to our friends at Surfrider San Diego for putting on such an awesome event, and to our partners at Urban Surf 4 Kids, Brew Dr. Kombucha, Capital One, and more for joining! Together, with the help of the 150+ volunteers, we cleaned up over 100 lbs of trash!
