Protecting our Parks with the NPCA at Cabrillo National Monument

Honoring and protecting the great outdoors is always in style here at Pura Vida. ✨ That’s why our latest collab collection with the Outdoorsy Gals™ directly benefits the National Parks Conservation Association to support their mission of protecting and preserving America’s national parks (for present and future!)

To celebrate the drop, Pura Vida and the NPCA teamed up to invite SoCal-based influencers with a passion for saving and protecting our public lands to Cabrillo National Monument. Together, attendees enjoyed a beautiful day in the sun learning all about how the protected grounds came to be and the fragile ecosystems that surround it.

In true PV style, we started the day off right stacking our friends up with their fave selects from the new collection. Once decked, it was time to join our NPCA-provided guide and take an illuminating tour of the Cabrillo National Monument. He shared the story of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, the man who stepped into history as the first European to set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States in 1542. The site was designated as a California Historical Landmark in 1932 and continues to serve as a wealth of cultural and natural resources.

The tour then traveled past the picturesque lighthouse over to the whale overlook 🐋 where we learned about the crucial ecosystems that exist above and below water, including the kelp forests. Kelp forests are expansive, stretching up to 30m vertically, and provide important infrastructure to many different species. Today, these plants are sadly at risk due to predators and warming temperatures, leaving much of the land barren.

The tour concluded at the tide pools where the group had the chance to watch adorable ocean critters like crabs, barnacles, and anemones graze across the rocks and bask in the sun. ☀️ Once we rounded out the tour, we gathered to enjoy a delicious lunch from SoCal hotspot Board and Brew to discuss everything we learned and all the deets on the new collection with a gorgeous view of the San Diego Bay. When asked about her favorite part of the day, our guest Bee said…

“My favorite part of the event was learning about the ways that the park is working to naturally protect and restore the kelp forests by battling the overpopulation of Purple Sea Urchins with their natural predators, sea otters and sunflower sea stars! I thought that was really interesting!

Our National Parks matter to me because they are beautiful places with rich cultural and natural history. We need people who love and see the value in places like this in order to fight for their conservation and protection for future generations to enjoy.”

We can’t thank the NPCA enough for making today happen and all the important work they do every day. By supporting organizations like theirs, we can all do our part in preserving America’s national parks and continue to be kind, do good, and live free.
